34 before 35 – Update

I think in winter a lot of stuff slows down – my social life, my physical activities, and my ability to blog frequently too, apparently. 🙂 So, I thought I’d update everything that I can so far on my 34 before 35. I’ve just realized that there are only about 6 weeks until my birthday, and I’m not nearly close enough to finishing this list in time. But, at least I’ll have a good start on what needs to get done for the next year.

So lets see shall we:

1. Get a job (obvious) – This is the one thing that I focused on more than anything else. I started a corporate sales job at the beginning of March, and so far it’s going well. I think this is where I will spend a significant chunk of my working life

9. Enter and complete a half marathon – well…. I haven’t been training. I had every intention of entering the Gun Run in October, but having not trained properly I really didn’t want to risk injuring myself. I have however entered the 10km run and have been given a target of an hour and 15 minutes in which to complete. This will be the focus for this particular event.

12. Take a trip to go water skiing for a day or weekend. I haven’t been for years and I’m keen to get back in the water – last weekend I went with someone I met recently to Langebaan for the day on Sunday to play around on the jetski. Unfortunately the water was way too choppy to spend too much time out. And to be honest I was terrified of falling into that ice cold water. Maybe I’ll go again when the weather warms up a bit.

14. Read 20 new books – this I’ve gone way past already – I think I’ve read over 30 by now. eBooks are just so much more accessible than paperbacks.  I’ll update the list on the Books I’ve Read tab

16. Try a new hairstyle. I’ve had the same style for about 4 years – so I cut my hair a lot shorter and coloured it a lot darker than it has been for years. I’ve been considering having a couple of purple streaks added but house-mate and I never seem to get around to actually getting it done. 🙂

23. Spend the day touring around Cape Town on the big red bus with Aurora – this we actually did yesterday, which I will blog about separately in a bit 🙂

It looks like I have a lot to do still – let’s see how many I can fit in between now and 19 September 2013.

34 before 35 #18 – Hike up Lion’s Head

Yesterday afternoon I joined @cupcakemummy on a hike up Lions Head for her birthday to watch the sunset. We had a little picnic of cupcakes and champagne packed, and headed up at around 4pm. Coral did get quite ahead of me at some point when she decided to practically run up some of the stairs. I was cursing myself for being so slow and not so fit, but I think I can be forgiven considering it was my first attempt, and she is 10 years younger than me 🙂

I took over 100 photos of the clouds and the sunset, so I’m including them here because I’m not having any success trying to upload them to Facebook.

I have to say it was quite an experience watching the sunset from above the clouds, with my feet still firmly on the ground.

And I can tick off another activity on my “to do” list 🙂

34 before 35 #10 – movies with Aurora

So far we’re  on track with this one. So far we have watched Rise of the Guardians, Zambezia, and Wreck-It Ralph. All in 3D… 🙂

There are some great new movies coming out over the next few months that we’re  looking forward to seeing. Smurfs 2, Despicable Me 2, Oz, The Croods (which looks like a really funny movie).

The only issue i have is that Ster  Kinekor seems to only have the kids movies in 3d, which is a bit of a problem for the younger kids. We have to wait a couple of weeks after release date before the movie is available in 2d, and usually at a cinema a lot further away from home, which is not ideal.

I am looking forward to some new fun movies this year though 🙂

34 before 35 update: #8 Get a tablet

And a lot easier than expected. 🙂

I had a Telkom  adsl line installed at home as part of getting my business up and running online. Telkom  offers customers mobile devices (and other useful business equipment like printers) at affordable monthly installments which is simply added to your monthly Telkom bill. Pretty neat huh?

I’ve made sure that the week ahead i am only working night shifts at the restaurant to maximize my business hours during the week. I’ve halved my petrol expense getting Aurora to and from school by arranging a lift club with a classmate who lives around the corner from me.

Slowly slowly things are coming together… 🙂

At the end of Feb I’d like to say with absolute certainty that i am successfully self employed.

34 before 35 #1 – get a job

Well, it’s not quite the executive office job I need, but it is work and for that I am grateful.

I started waitressing at a family restaurant close to home yesterday evening, and I have my next 2 shifts lined up for tonight and Saturday night.

Chatting with the other staff I realize that I can earn enough to cover my living expenses, and I can completely work around my visitation  schedule with Aurora so I can  maximize my time with her 🙂

I’ll also have the time available during the day to job hunt and attend interviews – and go to gym/movies/sleep late when I’m not working during the day.

It’s a start. 🙂

34 before 35 – #20 Volunteer at an animal shelter

Yesterday I spent the day out at DARG in Hout Bay with Cam in an effort to get started on my list of things I want to do/get involved with before my next birthday.

DARG is a pro-life, non-profit organisation that rescues, cares for and re-homes abused, neglected and abandoned cats and dogs. It is their vision to be a leading example of animal sheltering in South Africa.

When DARG was founded in 1995 by Cicely Blumberg, Leslie McClaghlan and a group of volunteers, it was inially a shelterless rescue network. DARG eventually rented, at a very nominal fee, 28 dog kennels from a Mrs Harrop who ran a boarding kennel. For 3 years more and more dogs found their way to DARG, and almost 3000 dogs were homed.

When Mrs Harrop passed away the property was put up for sale. DARG went on a search to find a donor who could buy the property and let DARG continue to run the kennels.

In early 2000 a Mr. Antonio Giovanini and his wife Joy bought the kennels and land. The land was put into a trust, and is reserved exclusively for use as a NO-KILL animal shelter.

We spent the morning walking some of the dogs that are currently residing at DARG, a few of the mutts really stood out 🙂 There are some really special animals available for adoption – these guys have so much love to give and they all deserve a chance to live their lives happy and loved. I have an adopted dog, Flick, who has been with me since June 2012. He is quite possibly the most loving animal I have ever had the pleasure of having in my life.

Spot - a very friendly young dog

One of the gorgeous kittens waiting for a home

If a new family pet is something you are considering for your family, I urge you to adopt, rather than buy. There are puppies and kittens available, and DARG will help you choose an animal suitable to your home and lifestyle. If you are unable to adopt you could consider also donating food (not just to DARG, you may have another shelter in your area that would benefit from caring people like you). If that is out of your budget, a couple hours of your time on weekends is all these animals need – just a little love and care goes a long way.

Ross - a very chilled little boy :)    I think this is Figaro - mischief personified!

What I will say though – is if you get a pet you need to understand that this should be a commitment you make for life – your dogs and cats are more than just animals. They are a part of your family and shouldn’t be abandoned or traded off because you don’t like their personality or you’re bored with them. It’s all or nothing when it comes to owning a pet.

You can find DARG on twitter , facebook and on the web

Spread the love and help save a life 🙂

34 before 35

I’ve seen a number of my friends and other bloggers creating a list of things they’d like to achieve before their next birthday. The list is as long as their age, and each year the list is changed and updated according to what has been done. Unlike resolutions it’s not so bad if you don’t manage to complete the list before your birthday – carry over what still needs to be done and start (or carry on) with the latest list.

So today after doing my earlier post I figured I”ll make a list and focus on working through it before my 35th birthday in September 🙂

1. Get a job (obvious)
2. Find a new family home for Aurora and I
3. Invest in a tent and other camping equipment 🙂

33.  Buy at least one music CD every month
34. Go for picnics at the various places in and around Cape Town.

There we go!  I thought it would be hard to think of 34 things I wanted to do this year – but now that I’ve given it some thought there are a few more things that I’d like to add… lol
